FORM + FUNCTION

A proprietary extruded aluminum curtain wall is at the heart of the renovation of an office building in Minneapolis. The two-story commercial-industrial space houses DC Group, a firm that provides equipment and maintains uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems for corporate customers, including AT&T, Kaiser Permanente, Verizon, Microsoft, and Oracle. Constructed in 1978, the original 1300-m2 (14,000-sf) building was in need of a makeover to reflect DC Group’s prominence and growth over the years.

HORIZONS

When a building is certified to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) status under the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC’s) rating program, the owners want to tell the world. Communicating the certification not only promotes the organization’s commitment to sustainability, but it can also educate the public about what it is, highlighting the specific design attributes needed to achieve certification, and recognizing the architect, builder, and other stakeholders.

Providing adequate rainwater management and control for air, vapor, and heat flow through the building enclosure is critical to long-term performance and durability. In contemporary wall assemblies with layered materials, the complexity of coordinating these various demands can be overwhelming.

Coatings have become are more specialized and technologically advanced than ever before, which is good news for architects and specifiers of healthcare facilities. These advancements mean specifiers are able to make better coating decisions based on appearance and function. This is especially important because evidence-based design research shows well-designed healthcare facilities can play a key role in creating a comfortable atmosphere that promotes healing.

Advantages in economics, ease of construction, and an abundance of proprietary wall systems have increased the popularity of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls. The contract delivery methods vary, often confusing the roles and responsibilities of various project team members. The growth of MSE wall construction, the wide selection of materials, and variable delivery methods can create many design and construction challenges and potential pitfalls.
