The Cold-formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) announced the recipients of several awards at the 2018 CFSEI Expo, held in San Diego. The institute presented Design Excellence accolades across three different categories, as well as an Innovative Detail Award.
Frameworks Engineering received top honors in the Design Excellence category of Municipal Projects for its work on Trinidad Baptist Church in Maryland. The renovation project highlighted multiple aspects of modern cold-formed steel framing engineering, including prefabrication, 3D framing analysis, building information modeling (BIM) drawing and detailing, and coordination with the design team to meet the design intent.
Matsen Ford Design Associates placed first in the Commercial Project category for 1600 West Loop South Ballroom Ceiling, which was installed at a luxury hotel in Houston. The main structure of the facility’s 1486-m2 (16,000-sf), two-story Grand Ballroom consists of structural steel beams, with cold-formed steel framing out of the ornate, vaulted ceiling.
Other first-place winners are:
“We are always amazed and inspired by these award-winning projects, which demonstrate the versatility of cold-formed steel design in solving complex design issues,” said Maribeth Rizzuto, managing director of CFSEI. “If you are an architect, contractor, or owner who is looking for new ideas or a different approach to your projects, we think you will be challenged by these award-winning structures to consider cold-formed steel framing in your designs.”
CFSEI also named Jennifer Zabik, P.E., president of Zabik-Turner Engineering, the recipient of its 2018 John P. Matsen Award for Distinguished Service, recognizing contributions of an individual who has volunteered time, talent, and resources to the cold-formed steel industry.
“Jennifer has contributed countless hours to educating others about using cold-formed steel in building construction through her work at CFSEI,” said Rizzuto. “She has taken on everything we offer, from presenting webinars to leading CFSEI Expo sessions to leading the Florida chapter to being president of our National Executive Committee.”
