Celebrating the continuing musical achievements of the residents of the Magnolia State, the Grammy Museum Mississippi opened a year ago in Cleveland. This one-story, 2601-m2 (28,000-sf) museum carries a value of $20 million, and features exhibits that explore the timeline of music developments and its supporting cultural context. It is located near the Delta Music Institute and its audio recording facilities. “The design concept was to create a building as contemporary as the internationally recognized brand it represents, while still resonating with the Delta vernancular,” says Jason Agostinelli, an architect with Dale Partners, which—in collaboration with Eley|Barkley—designed the museum.

In recent years, the term ‘resilience’ has become a buzzword used to demonstrate how products fit into adapting the built environment to expected changes in weather patterns, increases in storm frequency, and other natural disasters. Historically, engineers have used the term to define the structural performance of buildings under extreme conditions, but it is now being used by a much broader group of stakeholders interested in proper preparation, response, and recovery. As more groups try to classify what resilience means to them, the need for a comprehensive discussion to set a standard definition of the term is highlighted. Enter the American Wood Council (AWC).

Until recently, acoustics in commercial office buildings have not been a formal part of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating systems except on a case-by-case basis. The new LEED v4 criteria, however, now takes into account the value of good acoustics in enhancing occupant satisfaction and productivity. Check out sound advice on what you need to know.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) undertook a series of trials comparing the moisture and temperature management properties of several different exterior insulation and finishing system (EIFS) configurations with those of other claddings. This article looks at how the research was conducted (along with related modeling software), and focuses on the findings for different types of climate locations, and other data.

Siphonic roof drainage differs from conventional gravity drainage in what is called ‘full-bore flow.’ Unlike conventional drainage, a fully engineered siphonic roof drain system prevents air from entering, allowing the pipes to be completely full of water. Assemblies feature an air baffle to prevent air from entering the piping system at full flow and protects against debris. First developed in Finland in 1968, siphonic roof drainage systems account for one-fifth of commercial projects in Europe; as the numbers grow in the United States, find out how the assemblies work.
