New Georgia sheriff’s office balances beauty with budget
Space constraints at the Hall County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia meant the facility and its users needed to move to a new space—specifically, to a 13-ha (33-acre) Government Center in Gainesville. This presented the opportunity for not only a new facility, but also an improved one offering better costs, performance, and aesthetics. “After looking at the renovation of existing space at numerous other locations, the Sheriff’s Office decided the design and build of its own building at the administrative campus was the most practical and economical alternative,” said Doug Straughan, principal partner at Hussey Gay Bell, the project’s architect of record.
Among the goals for the project was a balance of contemporary aesthetics and cost-effectiveness—the team needed to meet the county’s financial limitations without compromising services or visual appeal.

Innovations with electrical power panels
When it comes to the power panel industry, new design approaches by manufacturers have upended fairly established design, manufacturing, and deployment conventions. Like all good industrial design, customer-driven product development in the electrical power industry is a continuous cycle of steps: define, build, measure, learn, and redesign. Recently, customer-centric design approaches have yielded advances in new modular and pluggable power panel designs that are changing the way electrical specifiers evaluate, design, and bid out their power systems.

Seven big considerations for large insulating glass units
IGUs have come a long way in the past 70 years. Originally mass-produced in the early 1940s to decrease noise and increase passenger comfort in railroad cars, the technology has become integral to a business much more stationary in nature—the building industry. When it comes to large units, there are plenty of logistical challenges to overcome, particularly considering the customized nature of most insulating glass designs. This article examines seven issues that need to be addressed with glass fabricators and glazing contractors.

Understanding the true cost of anti-ram perimeter security fencing
Purchasing an anti-ram perimeter security fence system is only half the financial battle in securing a property’s border against vehicle-borne attacks—the cost of installation still looms. Contractors, architects, and owners can realize significant savings by looking beyond the initial purchase price of the fence system and exploring the steps, materials, and equipment necessary to complete the project.

Acoustics: Creating a collaborative workspace without breaking the peace
While open-concept offices may look inviting, they can be noisy. Phone conversations, keyboard strokes, and meetings may not be loud individually, but when many employees are collectively combined in one space, it can be disruptive. Complaints about open spaces being too loud to concentrate should be a concern to employers and designers. What can be done?
