Texas roadway rehabilitation explores alternative embankment fills
The US 67 bridge over SH 174 in Texas had to be rehabilitated because the pavement had bunched where the road connected to the bridge on either end as a result of deteriorating embankments. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) attempted to rehabilitate the embankments using traditional soil stabilization methods, but moisture issues and settlement continued. Since traditional methods had not worked, TxDOT decided to employ two different structural fills to complete the work on either side of the bridge, and had electronic pressure monitors installed beneath the restructured embankments to independently monitor any future settlement. Read on to find out how the fills are performing.

Building an envelope warranty
When it comes to multilayered dry-joint rainscreen systems, designers face a potential loophole in the specification/installation process. Should a leak occur in a rainscreen design, before or after the project’s completion, the owner is faced with a costly dilemma. The problem usually occurs when there are different subcontractors for the air and vapor barrier system and the exterior façade system—the opposing subcontractors tend to blame each other. Find out how design professionals and specifiers can solve this problem.

Designing the right privacy and shading
When specifying glazing solutions for vision, sound, light, and heat control, design actions often come down to a choice between integrated louvers and integrated blinds. Knowing the difference between the two—and which option may be more suitable for an application—is critical. Integrated louvers are insulating glass units (IGUs) incorporating cord-free, extruded aluminum louvers within glass that can be customized to virtually any shape for interior and exterior glazing in vertical and sloped applications. Integrated blinds are cleaner and more hygienic than traditional Venetian blinds. However, they can easily be misaligned, leaving visual gaps. While they are not known for long-term durability, integrated blinds are the more cost-effective integrated alternative, lending themselves well to residential and educational designs. The intended purpose and function of a building will dictate whether the best privacy and daylighting solution to be specified is integrated louvers or blinds.

Testing roofs to ensure watertightness at the outset
All roofs eventually leak—it is just a matter of when and where. Nevertheless, the hope is that new roofing systems do not leak right from the start. It is critical to verify the watertightness of roofing, especially if it is to be covered with ballast or a vegetated roof assembly. This verification is a field quality-control measure beyond the scope of a roofing manufacturer’s visual inspections for issuance of a warranty. For existing buildings being considered for a reroofing program, conducting a roof survey to determine the location and extent of wet substrates is essential to making fiscally responsible decisions related to the program’s extent. This article explores the various leak-testing technologies available in the market.
