Cooling down a California brewery with HVLS fans
The owner of Ritual Brewing—a 2202-m2 (23,700-sf) space in an industrial building—in Redlands, California, was finding it difficult to maintain inside temperatures at a comfortable level. Staff at the brewery observed temperatures creeping up to 38 C (100 F) with no possibility of the stagnant space cooling down overnight. The lack of air circulation was also frustrating for customers and employees. To solve this problem, a large high-volume, low-speed (HVLS) fan was installed. Designed for extra-large spaces, the 7.3-m (24-ft), six-blade fan can move 9798 m3 (346,000 cf) of air per minute. The installation has greatly improved the overall mood at the establishment.

Green, lean, and safe strategies for sustainable outcomes
Construction operations are highly fragmented and complex in nature. This often leads to high levels of waste, making it difficult to build sustainable projects. This article explores an integrative approach to building green, lean, and safe projects—it proposes incorporation of lean construction strategies into sustainable design and construction to achieve desirable outcomes benefiting society, economy, and environment. The incorporation of lean construction practices and techniques can achieve superior outcomes across the facility life cycle, eliminating not only product waste, but also process waste. Find out how this works.

Protecting our historic glazing
Repairing historic windows is an admirable goal, but the reality of today’s tough requirements for windows often makes their replacement a more logical and economic choice. Whether the project calls for repair or replacement, there are new technologies and products that can help designers replicate historically accurate sightlines and aesthetics. This can be particularly difficult to achieve on existing structures while maintaining historic accuracy, but several manufacturers now offer good historic replication solutions. This article explores the several interconnected aspects of historic renovation or replication. The combined effort and knowledge of the entire project team can provide a successful installation that adds to the building’s historic character at a competitive cost.

Reducing energy consumption with high-temperature heating and ventilation
The Better Buildings Alliance, an initiative of the United States Department of Energy (DOE), is designed to improve the efficiency of commercial and industrial buildings in the U.S. by driving leadership in energy innovation. The commercial buildings sector—where 15 percent of the total floor space comprises warehouse and distribution space—consumes nearly 20 percent of all energy used in the United States. As a nation, the U.S. spends more than $200 billion annually to power the country’s commercial buildings. Unfortunately, much of this energy, both electric and natural gas, is wasted because of inefficient or outdated technology. Energy-efficient technologies, if installed, commissioned, and operated properly, are a cost-effective way to save money and reduce pollution. Read this article to find out how energy can be saved.
