California building overcomes insulation challenges with multipurpose solution
 
Built in 1955, the Laurel Plaza in North Hollywood, California, has had quite a history and is now entering the next phase of its story. Originally a store, the building was turned into a bustling shopping center before suffering significant earthquake damage a few years ago. The forgotten and dilapidated shopping center is now on its way to be revitalized as a mixed-use community. The building owner, Merlone Geier Partners, and Los Angeles-based Stir Architecture specified continuous insulation (ci) as the backbone for new exterior wall systems. The insulation is also the envelope’s water-resistive barrier (WRB).

QUESTION RE: SCOPE OF CA SITE VISITS
Looking for insight regarding the “scope of site visits” when on site. Some architects have a very limited point of view: limit focus to only elements related to purpose of site visit and nothing else (interpretation of AIA A201 doc). Others believe that a more holistic approach should be taken and view the whole of the project to more accurately gauge the progress along with not being afraid to take a more in-depth look at the work product while on site.
