Codes to consider when designing a classroom

There’s no shortage of threats to consider when increasing school security. While some school districts may consider using barricade devices to secure classroom doors, many of these security products violate current code requirements and ultimately add risk and liability.

It’s essential that architects and specifiers adhere to the codes that have been adopted in a project’s jurisdiction. The model codes and most state codes require hardware that allows students and teachers to evacuate quickly.

Critical language has been added to the 2018 International Building Code (IBC) to further clarify requirements:

1010.1.4.4 Locking arrangements in educational occupancies

The door shall be capable of being unlocked from outside the room with a key or other approved means.

1010.1.4.4 Locking arrangements in educational occupancies

The door shall be openable from within the room in accordance with Section 1010.1.9.

1010.1.4.4 Locking arrangements in educational occupancies

Modifications shall not be made to listed panic hardware, fire door hardware or door closers.

1010.1.4.4.1 Remote operation of locks

Remote operation of locks complying with Section 1010.1.4.4 shall be permitted.
