Rendering courtesy LMNB \" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Opener-8-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Opener-8-500x275.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Opener-8.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-100743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Sn\u00f8hetta and Clark Nexsen have unveiled designs for a new library in Charlotte, North Carolina.<\/span><br \/><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Rendering courtesy LMNB<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Designs have been revealed for a new technologically advanced library in the heart of Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/snohetta.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a> in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarknexsen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clark Nexsen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cmlibrary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlotte Mecklenburg Library<\/a> aims to reconceive how the library connects to people and everyday life with the new 10,684-m<sup>2<\/sup> (115,000-sf) space.<\/p>\n<p>Rising five stories, the building anchors the corner with a translucent prow cantilevering out over the sidewalk, opening itself up to the street. At street level, the fa\u00e7ade is glazed in a transparent band of glass that wraps the tapered corner.<\/p>\n<p>A copper soffit frames the new main entrance. Within, there is an open lobby space. At the rear, a new midblock plaza activates additional sides of the building. Above the glass podium, the library pulls back to reveal the historic McGlohon Theatre\u2019s western face, previously hidden in a narrow alley.<\/p>\n<p>The sloped wall on one side of the fa\u00e7ade is clad in ceramic panels inspired by North Carolina\u2019s history of earthenware and artisanry. Evoking a screen, or a patterned textile, the fa\u00e7ade is perforated to modulate light conditions within.<\/p>\n<p>Within the library, an atrium opens to the uppermost level.
