Image courtesy University of Arkansas\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Opener-22-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Opener-22-500x353.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Opener-22.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-109794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Grafton Architects, in partnership with Modus Studio, will design the new $16-million timber design research center project at the University of Arkansas.<\/span><br \/><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Image courtesy University of Arkansas<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ireland-based firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graftonarchitects.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grafton Architects<\/a>, in partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.modusstudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Modus Studio<\/a> of Fayetteville, Arkansas, will design the $16-million Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation at the University of Arkansas.<\/p>\n<p>Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, co-founders of Grafton Architects, were recently named the 2020 recipients of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/yvonne-farrell-and-shelley-mcnamara-awarded-the-2020-pritzker-prize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pritzker Architecture Prize<\/a>, an award known internationally as architecture\u2019s highest honor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very excited about building our first building in the United States in Fayetteville, Arkansas,\u201d said Farrell and McNamara. \u201cThis building helps us think about the future optimistically, where the use of timber with all its possibilities, becomes real, useful, and hopefully loved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This planned center, part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design, will be located on the northeast corner of the university\u2019s Windgate Art and Design District in south Fayetteville. This campus district houses existing and proposed buildings for the School of Art and University Libraries.<\/p>\n<p>The new applied research center will serve as the epicenter for the Fay Jones School\u2019s multiple timber and wood design initiatives, house the school\u2019s existing and expanding design-build program and fabrication technologies laboratories, and serve as the new home to the school\u2019s emerging graduate program in timber and wood design.<\/p>\n<p>The design team selection comes after a months-long process unlike anything previously done for a university building. The Fay Jones School initiated a design competition that was funded in large part by a grant from the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities. A total of 69 firms from 10 countries answered the university\u2019s request for qualifications from architects. From those submissions, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uark.edu\/articles\/51664\/six-finalist-firms-selected-for-anthony-timberlands-center-design-competition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">six finalist firms were selected<\/a> to conceive conceptual design proposals for the new research center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe basic idea of this new Anthony Timberlands Center is that the building itself is a\u00a0Story Book of Timber,\u2019\u201d Farrell said<em>.<\/em> \u201cWe want people to experience the versatility of timber, both as the structural \u2018bones\u2019 and the enclosing \u2018skin\u2019 of this new building. The building itself is a teaching tool, displaying the strength, color, grain, texture, and beauty of the various timbers used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the building\u2019s cascading roof responds to the local climate, captures natural light, and encloses this state-of-the-art educational facility. The building has a civic quality, opening up to show the vibrant research activities taking place within it.<\/p>\n<p>In that team\u2019s assessment of Grafton Architects\u2019 proposal, the group noted its combination of \u201cvalid pragmatic ideas with a poetic solution. Simultaneously complex and simple, it expresses a high aspiration. It creates a memorable institutional landmark for the urban landscape of Fayetteville.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The design on the project is scheduled to begin this
