The credits outline sustainable best practices that align with public health and industry guidelines related to cleaning and disinfecting, workplace re-occupancy, HVAC, and plumbing operations.<\/p>\n<p>The credits can be used by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) projects that are certified or are undergoing certification.<\/p>\n<p>The Safety First credits are part of USGBC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/usgbc-launches-post-pandemic-economic-recovery-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">economic recovery strategy<\/a> released last month, which focuses on sustainable solutions to rebuild a stronger and healthier economy by prioritizing healthy people in healthy places. The credits were created in direct response to COVID-19 and focus on the safety of those working in a building. These credits are available to all LEED 2009, LEED v4, and LEED v4.1 projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese new credits are a first step in helping the building and construction industry demonstrate its commitment to sustainable strategies as part of building a healthier, more resilient future,\u201d said Mahesh Ramanujam, USGBC president. \u201cSupporting environmental and occupant health is a critical part of supporting community health and, as we look ahead, we know LEED and the USGBC community will play a role in delivering solutions that lay a better foundation for our economic and environmental well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The four Safety First credits are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/credits\/safety-first-137-v4.1?return=\/credits\/Existing%20Buildings\/v4.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleaning and Disinfecting Your Space<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/credits\/safety-first-136-v4.1?return=\/credits\/Existing%20Buildings\/v4.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Re-Enter Your Workspace<\/a>, which also aligns with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/aia-releases-guidelines-for-safer-re-occupancy-of-buildings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Re-occupancy Assessment Tool<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/credits\/safety-first-139-v4.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Safety First: Building Water System Recommissioning<\/a>; and<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/credits\/safety-first-138-v4.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Managing Indoor Air Quality During COVID-19<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These credits are based on current, known information. USGBC will refine its recommendations and is looking for feedback on the new credits.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these new LEED pilot credits, projects can also take advantage of <a href=\"http:\/\/arcskoru.com\/\">Arc<\/a> Re-entry, a set of resources to help facility teams assess and communicate recovery efforts, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.wellcertified.com\/faqs\/how-will-the-well-health-safety-rating-be-developed-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WELL Health-Safety Rating<\/a>. Green Business Certification Inc.
