This project will bring three ICS communities\u2014the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lavelleprep.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John W. Lavelle Preparatory Charter School<\/a>\u00a0(grades K\u201312),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nicotracharter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicotra Early College\u00a0Charter\u00a0School<\/a>\u00a0(grades 8\u201312), and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newventurescharter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Ventures Charter School<\/a>\u00a0(grades 10\u201312)\u2014together into a single campus for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>According to CetraRuddy principal Theresa M. Genovese, AIA, LEED AP, a designer\u00a0of educational and cultural\u00a0projects, the new work for ICS reflects a growing\u00a0trend of incorporating urban schools within mixed-use\u00a0communities. It also\u00a0exemplifies a number of emerging best practices for contemporary K-12 learning\u00a0environments. Key project elements include the following.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sensitive integration<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The project will bring sensitive\u00a0integration within the larger mixed-use complex\u00a0through a separate ground-floor\u00a0student entry lobby and elevator bank, as well as the location of gyms,\u00a0cafeterias, and other social\u00a0spaces on the middle school floor to reduce noise\u00a0impacts for other building tenants.<\/p>\n<p><em>Diverse learning styles<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The facilities\u00a0will support diverse learning styles,\u00a0including a range of spaces for group and individual\u00a0musical\u00a0instruction, as well as a full commercial teaching kitchen and working rooftop\u00a0farm for food-based educational programs. These uses also support student job\u00a0training and internship opportunities\u00a0at Corporate Commons Three\u2019s onsite,\u00a0not-for-profit restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><em>Emphasizing wellness<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The design approach emphasizes\u00a0wellness\u00a0for both students and teaching staff. Highlights include\u00a0durable\u00a0finishes in a calming neutral color palette; open corridors and classrooms\u00a0oriented around the building\u2019s\u00a0perimeter for maximum natural daylight exposure;\u00a0dedicated counseling \u2018clusters\u2019 for each grade comprising\u00a0a meeting room,\u00a0counselling area, and teacher workroom adjacent to classrooms; large central\u00a0common\u00a0spaces for each grade to encourage a sense of community and belonging; a\u00a0yoga center and meditation areas\u00a0specifically for teachers; and the accessible\u00a0green roof for nutrition-focused, skills-based education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal for the design of the new Integration Charter School was to create an expanded campus which inspires the students and faculty to succeed together as a community,\u201d said Genovese. \u201cThe architecture and interior design evolve from our firm\u2019s guiding principles, creating a welcoming, flexible, and highly functional environment that nurtures and supports a range of diverse learning styles and educational needs, and that also enables teachers to do their best
