Architecture, urban design, and planning firm WXY has modernized Jefferson Market Library in New York City to make it more open, bright, and accessible to the public.<\/p>\n

Originally transformed from an 1870s courthouse, the library\u2019s new design simplifies its internal\u00a0organization and incorporates new\u00a0wheelchair ramps outside, with sympathetic\u00a0materials and an unobtrusive railing design.\u00a0An open, glowing double-height space in the previously dim\u00a0interior\u2014a restored feature of\u00a0the original judges\u2019 chambers\u2014has become a\u00a0venue for public art and readings.<\/p>\n

Jefferson Market Library has an extraordinary history, according to Layng\u00a0Pew, AIA, principal of\u00a0WXY and the project\u2019s leader.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaved from demolition\u00a0by the community in the\u00a0wake of the loss of Penn Station, in 1967, the architect\u00a0Giorgio Cavaglieri designed a\u00a0conversion to a library in one of the first\u00a0examples of this kind of adaptive reuse. The work\u00a0completed this year\u00a0continues in that spirit\u00a0by adapting\u00a0The New York Public Library facility to provide universal access to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
