New, high-efficiency condensing boilers provided the answer to their heating woes.<\/p>\n<p>The church is a landmark founded more than 150 years ago. In 1846, the Rt. Reverend Jackson Kemper\u2014the first missionary Episcopal Bishop\u2014established the Zion Episcopal community. The present-day stone church located on Fowler Lake was built in 1889.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur heating system consisted of four 12-year-old, 199-MBH [multiple BTUs) per hour],\u201d said Linda Georgeson, senior warden with Zion Episcopal Church. \u201cTwo of the four boilers were no longer functioning, and we were convinced the other two would fail because one was leaking. We were quite distressed to have such failures on this large purchase of units that were considered state-of-the-art when we bought them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boiler manufacturer offered to honor the warranty and install new units, but Zion declined. Instead, Georgeson requested bids from three mechanical contractors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe invested a lot of time researching and evaluating commercial boilers and reviewing the proposals we received,\u201d said Georgeson. \u201cIn an open meeting of the church, we charted cross comparisons of all of the different units, associated costs and warranties, and who would handle installation.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18640\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18640\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18640\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/cache_4098677093.jpg-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Zion Episcopal Church.\" width=\"261\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/cache_4098677093.jpg-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/cache_4098677093.jpg-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/cache_4098677093.jpg-624x416.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/cache_4098677093.jpg.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 261px) 100vw, 261px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Zion Episcopal Church.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In September 2015, church staff determined it was time to proceed with the project, and the units were installed in October.<\/p>\n<p>Four failing boilers were replaced with 299 MBH and 399 MBH ones; they were installed as a multiple boiler system (MBS) using a serial communication protocol feature\u2014this refers to the process of sending data one bit at a time, sequentially, over a communication channel. In this configuration, a master boiler controls the modulation and sequencing of boilers on the network to achieve the desired system supply temperature.<\/p>\n<p>The new units offer simple control, flexible functionality for multiple applications, and a durable design.
