It is this combination of superior properties that also provides architects and engineers with a new kind of freedom\u2014to design unique, unprecedented UHPC architectural elements that are also sustainable and extremely durable.<\/p>\n<p>A wide range of UHPC panel styles can be achieved, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>mechanically fastened restoration systems;<\/li>\n<li>rainscreens with textures and curvatures;<\/li>\n<li>curved curtain walls;<\/li>\n<li>decorative brise soleil lattice;<\/li>\n<li>perforated double-skin systems;<\/li>\n<li>ultra-thin canopy systems;<\/li>\n<li>customized colored designs; and<\/li>\n<li>energy-efficient louvers and sunshades.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following is an example of various projects with UHPC roof\/canopy systems that have been completed in recent years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Shawnessy LRT Station (Calgary, Canada)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Shawnessy-LRT-Station.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1805\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Shawnessy-LRT-Station-1000x998.jpg\" alt=\"Photo \u00a9 Vic Tucker\" width=\"360\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Shawnessy-LRT-Station-1000x998.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Shawnessy-LRT-Station-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Shawnessy-LRT-Station-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Shawnessy-LRT-Station-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Shawnessy-LRT-Station-624x622.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Shawnessy-LRT-Station.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Designed by Stantec Architecture Ltd., the Shawnessy light-rail transit (LRT) station has a double-curvature roof system comprising 24 ultra-thin UHPC canopies supported on singular UHPC columns. The 5.1 by 6 m (16 2\/3 by 19 2\/3-ft) canopies are just 20-mm (25\/32-in.) thick. Extensive tests on a full-scale prototype concluded the system carried full-factored live and dead loads without cracking and surpassed rigid test criteria.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Cap Cin\u00e9plex (Rodez, France)<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1804\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1804\" style=\"width: 355px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CapCinema.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1804 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CapCinema-1000x750.jpg\" alt=\"Photo \u00a9 Atelier d\u2019Architecture EmmanuelNEBOUT\" width=\"355\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CapCinema-1000x750.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CapCinema-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CapCinema-624x468.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CapCinema.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo \u00a9 Atelier d\u2019Architecture EmmanuelNEBOUT<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This movie theater has a cantilevered, overhanging canopy that spans 9.5 m (31 ft) with an integrated light-emitting diode (LED) system, evoking a starry night sky. The thin (<i>i.e.<\/i> 40-mm [1 3\/5-in.]) canopy is watertight and can provide shelter for up to 300 people. Composed of 12 juxtaposed precast UHPC panels, the system performs well against harsh environmental factors such as heavy snow loads, wind, sun, and heat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jean Bouin Stadium (Paris, France)<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1806\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1806\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Stade.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1806 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Stade.jpg\" alt=\"Photo \u00a9 Lafarge Medialibrary, Charles Plumey-Faye\" width=\"350\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Stade.jpg 584w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Stade-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1806\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo \u00a9 Lafarge Medialibrary, Charles Plumey-Faye<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jean Bouin Stadium is home to rugby team Stade Fran\u00e7ais and the site of the 2014 Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup. Designed by Rudy Ricciotti, it has a 23,000-m<sup>2<\/sup> (247,570-sf) UHPC envelope made from 3600 self-supporting UHPC triangular panels that includes a 12,000-m<sup>2 <\/sup>(129,167-sf) lightweight, waterproof roof with glass inserts.
