Swedish urban developer, Atrium Ljungberg, has unveiled plans to build a wooden city in Stockholm, which will extend more than 250,000 m2<\/sup> (2.6 million sf), making it the world\u2019s largest known wooden construction project.<\/p>\n

Apart from a residential component of 2,000 homes, the mixed-use development will also feature 7,000 office spaces in Sickla, which is south of Stockholm. Titled \u201cStockholm Wood City,\u201d the project\u2019s construction will start in 2025, with the first buildings expected to be complete by 2027.<\/p>\n

Modern wooden construction is a hot topic globally, but the completed projects so far are often individual buildings or blocks. Among others, The New European Bauhaus in recent years have pushed for increased wooden construction, but old conventions and beliefs have slowed down that development. As shown by various research studies, wooden buildings have many advantages such as providing better air quality, reducing stress, increasing productivity, and storing CO2 throughout their lifecycles.<\/p>\n

In addition to the advantages of wood, the project entails several other environmental benefits. The emphasis on office spaces is a way to meet the deficit in workplaces south of Stockholm\u2019s inner city, to further shorten commuting times for more people. In a country where energy supply and efficiency are high up on the national agenda, the project will focus on self-produced, stored, and shared energy. By investing in resource-efficient construction methods and circular material flows, the developer wants to bring innovation to the forefront.<\/p>\n
