Los Angeles International Airport\u2019s (LAX\u2019s) project, Midfield Satellite Concourse (MSC) South, will feature brise soleil\u2014a solar shading feature on the concourse\u2019s facade\u2014which will help it achieve passive cooling and energy conservation.<\/p>\n

The airport\u2019s authority, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), has been dedicated to delivering a superior design for the concourse. Architecturally, the concourse creates a place that celebrates and pays homage to the city of Los Angeles, with elements of the design strongly influenced by notable modernist homes. The project\u2019s exterior brise soleil system is one aspect of the design, which will also frame sightlines of the surrounding L.A. landscape. Inside MSC South, passenger comfort and well-being will be of utmost importance, with the interior feeling more like a domestic space than a traditional airport concourse.<\/p>\n

MSC South is an extension of the West Gates at the Tom Bradley International Terminal and will add approximately 13,936 m2<\/sup> (150,000 sf) and eight gates for narrowbody aircrafts. Utilizing an offsite construction method, MSC South will be built in nine segments, roughly 2.4 km (1.5 mi) away from the project site, and then carefully delivered and assembled in place. LAWA hopes the method will serve to be innovative and adaptive, saving public funds and time with a high degree of building control and supervision.<\/p>\n

The passive cooling and energy conservation will help the project achieve its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver accreditation goal.<\/p>\n

At a ceremony attended by members of the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC), LAWA executives and staff and members of the design and construction team, the newest addition to LAX\u2019s multi-billion-dollar Capital Improvement Program broke ground today.<\/p>\n

\u201cDrawing inspiration from California modernism, the design for LAX\u2019s MSC South captures a feeling of ease, simple but functional design, and timeless beauty,\u201d says Matt Ducharme, principal and West Coast design leader at Woods Bagot. \u201cA great example of this is realized in the concourse\u2019s exterior brise soleil system that links to the building\u2019s interior ceiling, creating a strong sense of place and indoor-to-outdoor connection for guests.\u201d<\/p>\n
