All photos courtesy AISC<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aisc.org\/nascc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASCC: The Steel Conference<\/a> in San Antonio, Texas, the 13 winners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aisc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Institute of Steel Construction\u2019s<\/a> (AISC\u2019s) 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aisc.org\/ideas2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel<\/a> (IDEAS<sup>2<\/sup>) Awards were announced. Spanning three categories based on total construction value (greater than $75 million, $15 to $75 million, and less than $15 million), nearly 100 submissions were received.<\/p>\n<p>Judging was conducted by a panel of experts, based on factors that included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>use of structural steel from both architectural and structural engineering perspectives;<\/li>\n<li>creative solutions to program requirements;<\/li>\n<li>innovative design approach to connections, gravity systems, lateral load-resisting systems, fire protection, and blast;<\/li>\n<li>inventive use of architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS); and<\/li>\n<li>steel-related technical or architectural advances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32045\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32045\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Samsung.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32045 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Samsung-300x254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Samsung-300x254.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Samsung-768x650.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Samsung-500x423.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Samsung.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32045\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Projects like Arup&#8217;s Samsung Americas Headquarters (which won a national award in the most-expensive category) met with success due to innovation and effective design with structural steel.<\/span> <br \/> <em>Photo \u00a9 Tim Griffith Architectural Photographer<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThese projects and the creative people behind them showcase the beauty and usefulness of structural steel,\u201d says Charlie Carter, president of AISC. \u201cWhat a great compilation of excellent solutions. Congratulations to the award-winning teams!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the most-expensive category (exceeding $75 million):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Arup\u2019s Samsung Americas Headquarters (Device Solutions) in San Jose, California earned a national award;<\/li>\n<li>Clark\/Smoot\/Russell\u2019s joint project, the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C., earned a national award;<\/li>\n<li>Arup\u2019s Fulton Center in New York City earned a merit award; and<\/li>\n<li>THP Limited\u2019s Nippert Stadium West Pavilion in Cincinnati, Ohio, earned a merit award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the $15 to $75 million range:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>LPA Inc.\u2019s Los Angeles Valley College Monarch Center in Valley Glen, California, earned a national award;<\/li>\n<li>Architectural Engineers Collaborative\u2019s Terminal East Infall at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport earned a national award;<\/li>\n<li>ARW Engineers\u2019 Weber County Library Headquarters Branch in Roy, Utah, earned a merit award; and<\/li>\n<li>Walter P. The Chicago Public Library\u2019s Chinatown branch (Drucker Zajdel Structural Engineers) was among the merit-award-winners for the least-expensive category (valued at less than $15 million).<\/span> <br \/><em>Photo \u00a9 Jon Miller, Hedrich Blessing<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the least-expensive category (less than $15 million):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NAST Enterprises Corp.\u2019s Pterodactyl office in Culver City, California, earned a national award;<\/li>\n<li>Drucker Zajdel Structural Engineers\u2019 Chinatown Public Library in Chicago earned a merit award; and<\/li>\n<li>ColoradoBuildingWorkshop\u2019s Lamar Station Classroom for Urban Farming in Lakewood, Colorado, earned a merit award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A number of additional awards were also granted. The Presidential Award of Excellence in Engineering went to Leslie E. Robertson Associates\u2019 Four World Trade Center in New York City, and jury recognition for an art installation, sculpture, or non-building structure went to Summit Metal Fabricators\u2019 Anthony Gormley Sculpture Fabrication &amp; Installation in Cambridge, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the year, awards will be presented at each project site to the team members involved in the structural framing system\u2019s design and construction (<em>e.g.<\/em> architect, structural engineer of record, general contractor, owner, etc.).
