Entries were assessed by a jury of experts, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jean Dufresne, AIA, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacearchplan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Space Architects + Planners<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Richard Fernau, FAIA, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fernauhartman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fernau + Hartman Architects<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Joyce Hwang, AIA, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antsoftheprairie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ants of the Prairie<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Jack Travis, FAIA; and<\/li>\n<li>Kulapat Yantrasast of <a href=\"http:\/\/why-site.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wHY<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Category 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41839\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41839\" style=\"width: 255px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5_casey-dunn-photography.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41839 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5_casey-dunn-photography-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5_casey-dunn-photography-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5_casey-dunn-photography-768x580.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5_casey-dunn-photography-500x378.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5_casey-dunn-photography.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41839\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Prospect House, a Dripping Springs, Texas-based event space by Max Levy Architect, uses the rotating mast of a wind vane to give visitors a sense of connection to the outdoors, and was a winner in the awards\u2019 category for projects costing more than $1.5 million. <\/span><br \/><em>Photo \u00a9 Casey Dunn Photography<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Three projects were recognized in this category, which honors projects (whether buildings, art, or design elements) with a construction cost of up to $150,000. The winners are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.org\/showcases\/135661-la-cage-aux-folles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Cage aux Folles<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/wtarch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Warren Techentin Architecture<\/a>, a layered bent steel tube structure located in Los Angeles\u2019 Materials and Applications courtyard gallery, which serves as a tiny venue for scripted and improvised performances;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.org\/showcases\/136056-colorado-outward-bound-micro-cabins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado Outward Bound Micro-cabins<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucdenver.edu\/Academics\/Colleges\/ArchitecturePlanning\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Colorado College of Architecture and Planning\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/coloradobuildingworkshop.cudenvercap.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado Building Workshop<\/a>, which comprise 21 cabins that use a \u2018box and frame\u2019 structure for lodging and storage and use elements such as cedar cladding, hot-rolled rainscreen, and prefabricated birch plywood to blend in with the surroundings; and<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.org\/showcases\/136081-sunset-pavillion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunset Pavilion<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/tomecekstudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tomecek Studio Architecture<\/a>, which frames the natural environment of a Firestone, Colorado, park using steel cantilevers for shade, steel plate and gabion walls to emphasize the view, and overhead perforations to track the sun\u2019s movement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Category 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Intended for projects of up to $1.5 million in construction cost, this category features five winners:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.org\/showcases\/136091-lightbox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lightbox<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/bcj.com\/projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bohlin Cywinski Jackson<\/a>, which serves as a home and photography studio on a site spanning the border between British Columbia and Point Roberts, Washington, using two stories of glass to capture sunlight and employing exposed wood beams and a prefabricated aluminum window system to achieve a simple aesthetic;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.org\/showcases\/136116-lauras-place\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laura\u2019s Place<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.architecture-bc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Architecture Building Culture<\/a>, a Portland, Oregon-based transitional housing facility for pregnant women and women with children, which underwent a collaborative expansion to reflect the cultural context of its residents;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.org\/showcases\/136126-little-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Little House<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mwworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mw|works<\/a>, a 2-m<sup>2<\/sup> (20-sf) project on an existing foundation in Seabeck, Washington, which uses elements such as a canopy, black cedar and blackened cement infill panels, soft pine plywood, and a patio to integrate with the natural environment;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.org\/showcases\/136131-prospect-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prospect House<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/maxlevyarchitect.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max Levy Architect<\/a>, an event space in Dripping Springs, Texas, which connects indoors and outdoors via a wind vane whose mast extends into the main hall and causes a decorative ring to turn with the breezes; and<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.org\/showcases\/136136-gemma-observatory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gemma Observatory<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/aw-arch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anmahian Winton Architects<\/a>, a private New Hampshire observatory that passes on a traditional dome structure in favor of a helical stair and faceted turret, irregular geometry, and elements that frame and reflect celestial landmarks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Category 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41840\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41840\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Lady_Bird_Loo_1_WhitPreston.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41840 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Lady_Bird_Loo_1_WhitPreston-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Lady_Bird_Loo_1_WhitPreston-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Lady_Bird_Loo_1_WhitPreston-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Lady_Bird_Loo_1_WhitPreston-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Lady_Bird_Loo_1_WhitPreston.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In the third category, for projects measuring smaller than 464 m2 (5000 sf), Mell Lawrence Architects\u2019 Lady Bird Loo was awarded for meeting project goals of vandal resistance, a safe and airy aesthetic, and low maintenance requirements on a set of trails in Austin, Texas.<\/span> <br \/><em>Photo \u00a9 Whit Preston<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This category awards projects smaller than 464 m<sup>2<\/sup> (5000 sf).
