The 11,706-m<sup>2<\/sup> (126,000-sf) loft-like space, designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stevenholl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven Holl Architects<\/a>, encourages interconnection between the arts, creating a collaborative and immersive student experience.<\/p>\n<p>The structure replaces the campus\u2019s original arts building, constructed in 1936, which was irreparably damaged during a flood in 2008. The appearance complements UI\u2019s adjacent <a href=\"https:\/\/art.uiowa.edu\/about\/facilities\/art-building-west\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Art Building West<\/a>, also designed by Holl in 2006, despite the two buildings\u2019 drastic differences in both design and materials. While UI\u2019s west building embraces natural finishes and elements, the Visual Arts Building instead encompasses an industrial aesthetic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did more than 30 design schemes,\u201d said Holl. \u201cIt was a very long process, but we were dedicated to finding the right fit. I am very, very proud of the results. It is an economical building, which was another big challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54100\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54100\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/u_of_iowa_visual_arts_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54100 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/u_of_iowa_visual_arts_3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/u_of_iowa_visual_arts_3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/u_of_iowa_visual_arts_3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/u_of_iowa_visual_arts_3-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/u_of_iowa_visual_arts_3.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-54100\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The scooped setbacks feature perforated panels to increase levels of natural light.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The poured-in-place concrete walls are clad in a custom-designed blue-gray, zinc wall panel system. Additionally, the building\u2019s southwest and southeast fa\u00e7ades, which overlook Art Building West, are covered in perforated stainless steel panels resting 178 mm (7 in.) off the cladding. The panels, perforated with more than 13,000 holes, allow for natural light to illuminate deep into the building through a series of scooped setbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 3530 m<sup>2<\/sup> (38,000 sf) of cladding was fabricated and engineered by Pohl group at its headquarters in Cologne, Germany, and shipped ready-to-install to the United States. A 1.5 mm (0.06 in.) rainscreen system was created specifically for the design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe invested a tremendous amount of engineering effort in the design of the custom zinc and stainless steel systems,\u201d said Thorsten Evenkamp of Pohl Group. \u201cThere was no caulking involved with the rainscreen system. In terms of durability and sustainability, it is really state-of-the art. We love working with natural metals and this project is truly a landmark building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the project received a Chairman Award for Overall Excellence from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metalconstruction.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metal Construction Association<\/a> (MCA).
