Photo courtesy Bentley University\" width=\"800\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Bentley_University_arena-500x362.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Bentley_University_arena-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Bentley_University_arena-768x557.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Bentley_University_arena.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Bentley Arena features more glass windows than a typical arena, which allows for more natural light and decreases the amount of electricity needed to light the building\u2019s interior. <\/span><br \/> <em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Photo courtesy Bentley University<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bentley Arena at Massachusetts\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bentley.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bentley University<\/a> has received <a href=\"https:\/\/new.usgbc.org\/leed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design<\/a> (LEED) Platinum certification under the <a href=\"https:\/\/new.usgbc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Green Building Council<\/a> (USGBC), making it one of the first standalone ice arenas in the country to achieve the designation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to the combination of the rooftop solar technology and energy-efficient mechanical design, the overall grid energy required to power the arena will be less than half of what it would take to power a building of a similar size,\u201d said Amanda King, director of sustainability at Bentley. \u201cThese technologies also cut the building\u2019s carbon footprint in half.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/arcusa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Architectural Resources Cambridge<\/a> and built by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suffolk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suffolk Construction<\/a>, the 7061-m<sup>2<\/sup> (76,000-sf) arena\u2019s sustainable features include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a 504-kW rooftop solar asset, comprised of 1400 panels, which will generate 40 percent of the building\u2019s annual electricity needs;<\/li>\n<li>a system that captures heat generated from the rink\u2019s ice-making equipment and uses it to heat water throughout the arena;<\/li>\n<li>a high-efficiency light-emitting diode (LED) system with motion-detection control;<\/li>\n<li>ice-making and air conditioning systems that use zero chlorofluorocarbons (CFC)-based refrigerants;<\/li>\n<li>high-efficiency plumbing features (<em>e.g.<\/em> waterless urinals, dual-flush toilets, low-flow faucets\/showers); and<\/li>\n<li>locally sourced construction\/finish materials, including 20 percent containing recycled content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, the arena will double as a \u201cliving lab\u201d for students majoring in sustainability science, where they will be able to analyze the building\u2019s energy data.
