Organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Institute of Standards and Technology<\/a> (NIST), the fire workshop brought together key stakeholders from industry, government, academia, and public laboratories. It also resulted in a new <a href=\"https:\/\/nvlpubs.nist.gov\/nistpubs\/specialpublications\/NIST.SP.1220.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research roadmap<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A strategy for reducing the thousands of deaths and injuries and billions of dollars in damage resulting from the more than a million fires each year in the United States is detailed in the roadmap. It provides guidelines for developing science-based approaches to solving fire problems for multiple materials.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop participants agreed the highest priority for future scientific studies and development projects in flammability should go to cross-cutting research approaches that can work against multiple hazards across a wide range of materials and applications. These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Real fire behaviors<\/strong>: To understand how the actual use of a product impacts its fire service-life (the fire resistance over the life of a product) and burning behavior;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engineered fire-safe products<\/strong>: To enable the development of technologies yielding products compliant with flammability regulations for their entire lifetime; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bench-scale and computational tools<\/strong>: To develop and use physical testing methods and computer modeling systems that accurately predicts a material\u2019s real-life fire behavior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new roadmap strongly recommends these research approaches be applied to the five most critical and urgent fire hazards including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>residential upholstered furniture;<\/li>\n<li>residential buildings in wildland urban interface (WUI) communities;<\/li>\n<li>timber used for multistory buildings;<\/li>\n<li>passenger railway cars; and<\/li>\n<li>insulation applied to the exteriors of high-rise buildings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe workshop participants determined these application areas should be prioritized for R&amp;D because reducing flammability in all five should significantly reduce the overall losses from fires in the future,\u201d said NIST materials research engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/people\/rick-d-davis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rick Davis<\/a>, one of the authors.<\/p>\n<p>NIST has already begun putting the new roadmap to work, added Davis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on extensive discussions with our in-house experts after considering the roadmap\u2019s guidelines, we are planning changes in our upcoming year\u2019s research and modifying our long-term strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More information on NIST\u2019s efforts to reduce flammability is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/el\/fire-research-division-73300\/flammability-reduction-73304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent workshop on fire properties of materials concluded cross-laminated timber (CLT) and insulation applied to the exteriors of high-rise buildings are among the materials most in need of urgent research and development. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4887,"featured_media":63480,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1029],"tags":[2064,4461,70,3286,4462,20],"class_list":["post-63479","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-cross-laminated-timber","tag-fire-hazard","tag-insulation","tag-national","tag-national-institute-of-standards-and-technology","tag-wood","entry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.8 -
