The project was recently honored by the National Institute of Building Science (NIBS).<\/span> <em>Photo \u00a9 Benjamin Benschneider<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\" wp-image-6670\">Seattle\u2019s Bullitt Center was the winner in the High-performance Buildings category at the 2014 Beyond Green awards, organized by the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC).<\/p>\n<p>The six-story, 4830-m<sup>2<\/sup> (52,000-sf) Bullitt Center was lauded for promoting density in urban areas, and demonstrating how an urban office building can meet its own water, waste, and energy needs without adversely impacting the environment. The design team\u2014consisting of Miller Hull Partnership, PAE Consulting Engineers, Point 32, and Schuchart Construction\u2014used building information modeling (BIM) and technical analysis to create one of the most energy-efficient commercial buildings in the world. (For more on some of the glazing technologies specified for the Bullitt Center, see the 2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionspecifier.com\/window-and-storefront-thermal-performance-what-every-specifier-needs-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> in <em>The Construction Specifier<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-image-6670\">\u201cWhat they have been able to accomplish in an urban environment really sets this project apart and provides inspiration and demonstration of what is possible,\u201d said R.K. Stewart, FAIA, NIBS immediate past-chair of the board of directors, and a member of the jury.<\/p>\n<p>At the ceremony, held earlier this month as part of the 2015 NIBS conference, three other projects received Merit Awards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Karuna House (and the project team of Holst Architecture, Hammer &amp; Hand, Imagine Energy, Earth Advantage, and Intep);<\/li>\n<li>New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Center for Building Knowledge\u2019s Smart Supermarkets Program; and<\/li>\n<li>the \u2018timber tower\u2019 research of Skidmore, Owings &amp; Merrill LLP (SOM).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Highlights of these projects will be posted online as part of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbdg.org\/references\/casestudies.php\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Whole Building Design Guide<\/em><\/a> case study series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seattle\u2019s Bullitt Center was the winner in the High-performance Buildings category at the 2014 Beyond Green awards, organized by the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":6785,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1029],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6674","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","entry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.8 -
