Solis<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Earlier this month, the Los Angeles County approved a motion to study the feasibility of re-adapting the former <a href=\"http:\/\/dhs.lacounty.gov\/wps\/portal\/dhs\/lacusc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general hospital<\/a> to offer affordable, low-income, and mixed-use housing.<\/p>\n<p>At 139,355 m\u00b2 (1.5 million sf), the 19-story, art-deco building is the county\u2019s largest health campus. After the 1994 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/natural-disasters-and-environment\/1994-northridge-earthquake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northridge earthquake<\/a>, the county decided to construct a newer, state-of-the-art medical facility to replace the general hospital. When the modern LAC+USC Medical Center opened in 2008, the old hospital, a historical landmark, was largely abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must be innovative and audacious if we want to end the homelessness crisis and simultaneously increase affordable housing in the region. To help solve these problems, we have to think outside of the box,\u201d said supervisor Hilda L. Solis who authored the motion. \u201cToday\u2019s action to transform the abandoned General Hospital into a marquee facility will not only breathe new life into this historic building, but it will also help our most vulnerable residents regain control of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CEO will now lead the detailed feasibility study and \u00a0collaborate with representatives from the county\u2019s Housing for Health, the Community Development Commission, the Health Agency, LAC+USC Medical Center, the Department of Public Works, Regional Planning, and with the LAC+USC Health Innovation Community Partnership.
