In New York City\u2019s Greenwich Village, a new rooftop expansion and athletic center was built to accommodate growth for Grace\u00a0Church School<\/a>, making use of every inch of the urban institution.<\/p>\n

Designed\u00a0by Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects<\/a> (MBB), the 1301-m2<\/sup> (14,000-sf), double-height addition to the high school\u2019s\u00a0campus delivers flexible spaces with sunlight for\u00a0varied physical activities,\u00a0academic uses, and events. Centered on a large, multipurpose gymnasium and new\u00a0gathering\u00a0areas, the expansion adds offices, classrooms, locker rooms, and\u00a0storage facilities, as well as a new fitness center and\u00a0golf simulator room.<\/p>\n

The arched steel roof is\u00a0integrated with the school\u2019s original footprint and harmonizes with\u00a0the surrounding neighborhood. Students ascend\u00a0an\u00a0extended stairwell approaching a large skylight bringing light deep into\u00a0the core of the building. The\u00a0gym\u2019s ceiling includes skylights with anti-glare panels.<\/p>\n

The expansion includes a curved-steel structure and an acoustically\u00a0isolating concrete slab set on floor\u00a0jacks to reduce vibration and sound\u00a0transmission to classrooms below.<\/p>\n

\u201cUrban\u00a0schools built on constrained or compact sites face limitations on growth, yet\u00a0Grace Church School has turned\u00a0its limitations into assets, fostering a\u00a0strong learning community through creative placemaking and facility\u00a0design,\u201d said\u00a0Sara Grant, AIA, MBB partner. \u201cCapturing a rooftop or\u00a0activating below-ground spaces can offer flexibility and new ways to\u00a0bring\u00a0students and faculty together to support diverse education needs.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
