The creation of the Mosaic Village project in Charlotte, North Carolina, not only provided Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) with a new dormitory to increase its student housing, but it also helped revitalize the city’s historic West End. Constructed on a former brownfield site, the mixed-use project was developed to do more than offer students a residence for JCSU. By also including a level for retail space into the plan, the hope was to spark new life into an old abandoned city corridor. Certification in the construction industry provides return-on-investment (ROI) and market differentiation, as well as improves safety and quality by establishing best practices. The benefits include increased safety, less material waste, and early identification of design and construction challenges, as well as creating a pool of qualified individuals or plants well-suited for a particular project. Further, certification helps level the playing field as it ensures plants and crews are all working toward the same desired level of quality.

Computer-aided design (CAD) has had unprecedented impact on how buildings are envisioned and constructed. From the early 1980s, where AutoCAD revolutionized 2-D drafting, to the present, where material modeling, earthquake simulation, and photo-realistic 3-D rendering are common, computer-based tools have affected every aspect of the architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) industry.
