Bifold door benefits for Harvey-hit hangars
Pilots housing airplanes at the Aransas County Airport in Rockport, Texas, are grateful for the bifold doors on the hangars. Earlier this summer, this small gulf town, located 48 km (30 mi) north of Corpus Christi, faced Category 4 winds for more than 13 hours when Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc in the Lone Star State.
The airport lost seven buildings for a total of 8360 m2 (90,000 sf) of hangar space. Fifteen airplanes were destroyed and 22 more damaged in the storm. However, hangars with bifold doors were still standing after the hurricane passed.

Understanding the possibilities with engineered wood
Since the introduction of plywood and glued-laminated timber (glulam) beams more than a century ago, engineered wood has continuously progressed to provide greater strength, versatility, consistency, and many other attributes. Today, the engineered wood category encompasses oriented strand board (OSB), strand and fiber siding, laminated strand lumber (LSL) I-joists, laminated veneer lumber (LVL), and mass timber products. These building materials allow longer clear spans, greater energy efficiency, and faster, more economical construction. In commercial construction, four- and five-story wood office buildings are common, with the tallest wood buildings now reaching 20 stories. As customer tastes change and building requirements allow wider use of wood in building construction, design professionals must keep pace with product innovations.

BIM in the bathroom: New capabilities for washroom and locker room design
For restrooms, use of building information modeling (BIM) can help reduce construction time and costs, improve accessibility and safety, and offer cost-efficient sustainable designed spaces for the facility owners. Such rooms can be expensive spaces to construct, especially when several construction trades are working in these smaller, confined areas. Typically, designers duplicate the same toilet room layout(s) throughout the building.

Increasing clarity with fire-protective glass
Even with its fire- and life-safety performance, glass ceramic glazings have a tradeoff. The glass is traditionally amber-colored cast and has higher levels of distortion and haze compared to float glass. However, over the last decade, the various manufacturers of glass ceramics have incrementally improved the transparency of the once-heavily tinted fire-rated products.

Saving on swimming pool energy costs
When it comes to designing indoor swimming pool facilities, it is critical to ensure not only a healthy interior environment, but also energy efficiency. New technologies can provide both optimal natatorium environmental control and curtail utility consumption when specified. Commercial dehumidifiers and 100 percent outside air ventilation system (OAVS) technology for indoor pools have significantly changed in the last decade.
