Expanded polystyrene insulation hard at work on the roof

Expanded polystyrene insulation hard at work on the roof

According to the 2015 International Building Code (IBC), roofs are required to have a design slope. Today, the design-build sector is increasingly specifying tapered expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation solutions to comply with codes—many existing buildings that are being retrofitted require the slope to be altered to meet regulations—as well as save time and money on the roof.

Controlling air
Failures

In most climate zones within the United States, a dedicated air barrier is required by code as part of the building enclosure to control and manage airflow between the conditioned interior and exterior environments. At a recently built natatorium in the northeast, the fluid-applied air barrier located on the exterior of the sheathing was integrated with the perimeter of the junction boxes. Although this detail created an effective integration of the air barrier with the junction box, the installation did not account for the unsealed electrical conduit serving the box. Interior moisture entering the junction box via the open conduit had resulted in condensation and moisture-related damage to electrical devices during the first winter following occupancy.

Temporary Controls
I am currently writing a new master spec Section 01 57 00 – Temporary Controls, which, in my case, will be used on a wide array of my employer’s engineer-led projects. While I know that CSI MasterFormat sets forth a number of topics that could (perhaps should) be addressed in a Section 01 57 00, I was curious what others believe should be in such a section, or what other firms have in such a section.

Fitwell Certification
I just received an RFP for additional services to adapt a project manual to reflect changes in the documents to achieve a Fitwell certification. This project is set for IFC documents in less than 30 days. The AHJ has some very extensive green building design standards anyway. The permit set is done and being reviewed. Has anyone done one of these, and is there anything I should be concerned about? It looks like a “Well Building” knockoff with no prerequisites.
