What lies beyond the veneer? |
Failures |
|
Water leakage through the exterior wall was reported at a 30-year-old, one-story commercial building in the Midwest. The building had been constructed with concrete masonry unit (CMU) bearing walls clad with brick masonry veneer, and steel open-web joists supporting a steel roof deck. The leakage was the result of inadequate construction of the CMU backup wall in some locations. |

Combining smart insulation solutions for high-performing buildings |
|
High-performing commercial buildings are becoming popular because of evolving codes and stricter standards for occupant safety, comfort, as well as energy efficiency. In addition to providing benefits like improved indoor air quality (IAQ), buildings designed and constructed with efficiency and performance in mind set the stage for financial and environmental sustainability because a stronger building envelope is created. One can achieve high-performing building envelopes by combining continuous and interior cavity insulation solutions.

PIPE SPECIFICATION HOME |
I have a pipe spec for cryogenic liquids (e.g. liquid nitrogen, oxygen, etc.), and am trying to find the right spec division for it to call home. In the past, I’ve seen it under Div 22 with laboratory gases...even though it is not pipe carrying a gas. I’ve seen it under Div 23, but that was with a company that put all its piping in Div 23 both HVAC and process. Looking at the CSI divisions, it could be a Division 40 spec, but that isn’t a perfect fit either because this piping is not always ‘process related.’ How have other folks addressed where unique specifications live? |

FM GLOBAL INSURED SPECIFICATION IMPLICATIONS... |
We have just been asked by a client, “What design changes would be required if we switch carriers to Factory Mutual?” Design has been complete and we’ve already issued early foundation and structural packages. I’m aware of the 50,000 item database of FM approved systems. Is there a checklist we can use to go back and see all the items that would require redesign? |
