Using CLT to spark change

Mass timber—specifically cross-laminated timber (CLT)—continues to spread across the nation as an alternative to traditional concrete and steel construction. CLT panels reduce infiltration of outside air, allow extremely efficient raising time, and leave little to no waste onsite.

Resiliency: Future-proof building design
Horizons

Resiliency refers to the design intent of ensuring a structure’s ability to withstand environmental, sociopolitical, financial, and cultural impacts.
When contemplating resilient design, more and more questions continue to emerge. How should design best practices and standards be revised if 100-year storms are now happening every 10 years? It is a good question to ask, but is weather the biggest adversary in the pursuit of resilience? Or are there other factors one needs to ‘future-proof’ the buildings from?

VIRTUAL SITE OBSERVATIONS AND SUBSTANTIAL COMPLETION REPORTS
Many of us designers and architects have projects reaching substantial completion during this COVID-19 lockdown that are in need of site observations or punch visits and in some cases clients requesting that we perform those observations virtually. I’d like to hear from as to what various jurisdictions around the country are recommending as well as, perhaps more importantly, what the organizations focused on our practice are saying about the risks and best practices of virtual reporting as we meet our obligation of Standard of Care. I appreciate any thoughts as soon as possible, as well as links to any good articles or information.

CONTRACT CLAUSES FOR VIRUS CLAIMS
I’ve recently been in discussions with my employer’s in-house legal counsel, ACEC’s general counsel, and other professional colleagues on the contract provisions most-applicable to claims resulting from the coronavirus outbreak. Such claims can be by the contractor against the owner, or by the design professional against the owner, or in various sub-contractual relationships. It would be interesting to learn, on this thread, what types of claims others are seeing, both from contractors and design professionals, due to the virus, and what contractual clauses are being cited in such claims.
