Illinois university wins DOE’s net-zero retail building design challenge |
|
An interdisciplinary team of architecture and engineering students from Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago, won the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Solar Decathlon in the Retail Building Division. The collegiate competition challenges the next generation of building professionals to design high-performance, low-carbon buildings powered by renewable energy.

A conversation between a doctor and patient in a medical exam room, or between a lawyer and client in an office, should be confidential. People in adjacent rooms should not be able to listen to the private information being exchanged.

Using masonry for wet flood-proofing |
|
There are two types of flood-proofing—dry and wet. Dry flood-proofing implies a new design for a structure or retrofit additions to an existing facility that prevents the entry of flood waters. This includes proactively avoiding lower openings or permanently sealing them, retrofitting waterproof closures to lower openings, or providing temporary waterproof membranes or barriers to block flood water intrusion. A common, last-minute dry flood-proofing technique is to wall in the structure with sand-bags, thereby blocking rising flood waters.

The Anthem Technology Center’s new Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver-certified, Class A, office tower in Midtown, Atlanta, Georgia, is a hub for 3000 professionals creating new capabilities to enhance the consumer health care experience. The design team used ceiling systems to meet the aesthetic, acoustic, and sustainability goals of the office building.

ADDENDA AND ISSUED FOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANUALS |
Frequently I am asked to reissue specifications for construction that include Addenda revisions. The question always comes up as to how to indicate Addendum revisions in the Issued for Construction Project Manuals. Sometimes I am asked to use bold-underlined text for added text and strikeout for deleted text, each of which is followed by a parenthetical reference to the Addendum that promulgated the revision.
