Specifying cold-formed steel for resilient buildings

With the number of weather and climate-related disasters in the United States on the rise, the engineering and construction industries have rightly prioritized a focus on adopting methods for designing resilient buildings able to withstand hurricanes, wildfires, flooding, and other natural disasters. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there were 22 such events in 2020 to affect the country, with losses exceeding $1 billion each. This marks a new annual record, shattering the previous.

NFPA 285 engineering judgments

Building codes in the United States regulate the use of plastics, foam plastic insulation, and other combustible materials used in the building envelope through a robust combination of reference standards, material fire tests and complete assembly fire performance requirements. Combined with other building and fire code requirements—such as compartmentation, active fire suppression sprinklers, egress provisions, and height and area limitations based on building type and occupancy—these provisions for the building assembly produce cooperative layers of fire safety. It is these multiple layers of fire safety, not a single requirement, which result in safe construction. Modern wall assemblies have become increasingly complex as critical elements of the building enclosure.

PROJECT ARCHIVING AND DOCUMENT RETENTION
Does anyone have any guidance on archiving project materials and data files (design drawings, construction submittals and samples, record drawings, CAD files, and BIM Models)? Our off-site storage costs are significant and we need to provide clarity to staff regarding what needs to be archived for legal reasons and future project reference. Often we have staff putting all project related drawings and documents in banker’s boxes and tubes and sending them off to storage. Our network files are loaded up with all sorts of project files and should be reviewed for what needs to be retained or what can be deleted. I understand a document retention and destruction policy would be helpful in this regard. Your comments and suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

REQUIREMENT TO PROVIDE UNSPECIFIED PRODUCTS
I have not seen this before. A specification that calls for submitting unspecified products for review. “For Installation Materials and Accessories: Submit a complete list of unspecified products that are nonetheless required for installation of work of this Section, not more than 14 days after Notice of Award.” I personally think this is problematic and onerous. Just because I have not seen it does not mean it is wrong or uncommon, just new to me. Has anyone come across this before?
