Construction-related failures in plumbing pipes
Metal corrosion is an ever-present problem in the plumbing industry. Common piping materials such as copper, steel, and cast-iron are readily oxidized and thus undergo aqueous corrosion at a rate dependent on the corrosivity of the service environment.

CSI DISCUSSIONS OF THE WEEK
PRESERVING HISTORIC CONCRETE BALUSTRADE RAILS
I’m working on a unique project in which 100-year-old historic concrete balustrade rails are in need of repairs and refurbishment. Their surfaces are showing signs of wear and weathering, and I would like to clean the components, make repairs as necessary, and help protect them with some type of permeable coating. A petrographic evaluation has found the majority of the balusters and rails contain no course aggregate, and the binder is straight cement. There is a good amount of carbonation. The baluster grout had a relatively high water to cement (w/c) ration when cast, but 100 years of curing has resulted in a moderate hard paste. The sand has a slightly courser gradation than normally expected and consists almost entirely of quartz, with lesser amounts of quartzite, feldspars, and hematite/goethite. Any thoughts on what type of product(s) to use would be greatly appreciated.

BALLISTICS RESISTANT GLAZING
I’m helping a colleague with a ballistic glazing application. We’re very early in the process right now. Are there any members who are Certified Construction Product Representatives (CCPRs) with this type of application, familiar with these types of applications, or could recommend an avenue to reach out for product or application information?
