Structural silicone glazing |
Contemporary prefabricated and unitized systems that leverage SSG technology have come to supplant earlier field-fabricated and stick-built systems that typically limited the use of field-installed SSG glazing, often using SSG only in combination with mechanically captured pressure bars along vertical or horizontal edges.

Early sustainability planning in research laboratory design |
The early phases of the design process, such as programming and planning efforts, are typically exercises to get the entire team on the same page concerning programmatic priorities and budget limitations. Additionally, these early phases should also be approached through a lens of sustainability.

DISCUSSIONS OF THE WEEK |
|
IS THERE A CONSENSUS ON TOC PAGE COUNT NUMBERS? |
What is the consensus on the value of section page count numbers as part of the table of contents (TOC) for a project manual? With all of the different strategies and software tools, we all have current best practices (which evolve). In our practice, we end up using a hybrid approach which usually requires some time at the end coordinating the actual number of pages in each section, and listing them line by line in the table of contents, which is painful. We do this because, ‘We have always done it that way.’ I would really like to eliminate them. If there is some value or hidden purpose in these numbers, I’m willing to change my mind. What are your thoughts?

BUDGETING METHODS |
I’m interested in hearing your experiences with project management methods and considerations for budgeting for specifications. I’m seeking feedback from architecture firms with in-house specifiers, but I would like to hear from independent specifiers as well. I’ve seen budgets based on percentages of total fees, calendar time analysis, project size and complexity, flat rates, etc. How are others addressing project delivery, coordination time, revenue the company wishes to earn employing specifiers, additional service value above and beyond editing and raw deliverables, and specifier skill level in their methods?
