Campus renovation delivers new theater, better connectivity

Skanska will build a new theater and lead phased renovations at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) in Fredericksburg, Va. The project will deliver a new home for the university’s Department of Theater and Dance while modernizing existing arts facilities.
The work includes a new, multi-story theater totaling 6,339 m2 (68,230 sf), with a 293-seat performance hall. Skanska will also renovate 7,618 m2 (82,000 sf) of existing fine arts buildings and construct an 831 m2 (8,950 sf) addition.
The project covers site development, infrastructure, the new building’s core and shell, and interior fit-outs. Site improvements will add new arrival and drop-off areas, accessible parking, service areas, and upgraded pedestrian connections. Outdoor academic and program spaces are also planned.
Within the existing facilities, crews will upgrade plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and life-safety systems. The work will also improve acoustic isolation, art studio exhaust safety, and building circulation.
Phased construction to keep campus running
Maintaining university operations will be a key challenge throughout construction. Skanska will use a phased schedule and swing space to keep academic departments operating as crews move through the project.
“We’re proud to begin our partnership with the University of Mary Washington by helping to bring these important and improved facilities to life for the students and faculty who will use them for years to come,” said Mark Balling, executive vice president responsible for Skanska’s Mid-Atlantic building operations. “Active construction takes careful sequencing, and our team’s deep expertise will allow us to deliver all portions of the project without interrupting the campus community.”
