Richard (Dick) Eustis, PE, FCSI, CCCA, CSC, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 27, at a healthcare facility in Old Town, Maine, at the age of 83. Born on October 24, 1932, the CSI Distinguished Member, Fellow, and past-president made significant contributions at the Maine, Northeast Region, and Institute levels since joining in 1970.

“It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our friend and colleague, Dick Eustis, “stated CSI president, Lane Beougher, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, on CSI’s website[1]. “Dick was a great human being, respected and loved by many. With more than 40 years of leadership in CSI, Dick led and mentored many of us. Dick and I served together on the Governance Reform Implementation Task Team. He was an incredible fount of knowledge about the organization and its inner workings. Later, I asked Dick to serve on the Bylaws Amendment Review Task Team and he performed this role with the same remarkable dedication. His passing is a tremendous loss to the CSI family.”

A Professional Engineer in Maine, Eustis was also a Life member of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), a member of Construction Specifications Canada (CSC), and a certified construction contract administrator (CCCA). He spent almost four decades working for the University of Maine System, overseeing construction and maintenance of buildings at all seven of its campuses.

For the last year, Eustis was also a member of The Construction Specifier’s editorial advisory board, offering constructive criticism and feedback on a variety of technical features, from ceilings and waterproofing to acoustic failures. As recently as mid-January, he weighed in with suggestions to improve the readability of a curtain walls piece. His comments were always insightful, incisive, and timely—simply put, he improved every article he reviewed with his frank, passionate comments and curious questions.

His obituary[2] in the Bangor Daily News refers to him as “a mentor to many, a tech geek (how many seniors have two desktops, two laptops, an iPad, and over 3000 people in their e-mail contact list?), and a respected member of the state, national, and international civil engineering communities.”
