A new skyscraper in New York City marks the completion of the world’s 100th supertall structure.
Standing at 425.5 m (1396 ft), 432 Park Avenue is the tallest residential building in the world and the 14th tallest overall. It is New York City’s seventh supertall structure, which makes it the city with the second highest number, behind Dubai with 18. Park Avenue typifies ‘superslim’ typology that has been made possible by advances in lateral resistance technology.
Buildings more than 300 m (984 ft) are categorized as ‘supertalls.’ The world’s first 50 took 80 years to complete between 1930 and 2010. Today, the total number has doubled to 100 in just five years. The majority of supertalls are located in Asia and the Middle East, but New York City has remained an active center for such construction.
According to data by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), there are more than 100 supertalls scheduled to be completed in the next five to six years, including Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Tower, which will be the world’s first 1-km (0.6-mi) high building.
