Integrated design firm, Sasaki will lead a comprehensive sustainability plan for Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has tasked the firm with creating a strategy that will celebrate the architectural masterpiece’s heritage yet ensure its preservation into the future.
“After Wright’s death in 1959, development at Taliesin West was not planful or by design,” says Stuart Graff, president and CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. “New technologies, societal changes, and even climate change make having a thoughtful path forward important to the Foundation and the surrounding community.”
The Foundation intends to implement a variety of new public programs and tours, in addition to developing different forms of guest engagement, while ensuring sustainable site management.
Vital components of the Taliesin West Preservation Plan include an integrated plan and extensive documentation of the site and surrounding desert ecosystem, serving as a guide for any future work or development. Emphasis will be placed on sustainable design to lessen the impact on the ecologically sensitive Sonoran Desert.
Taliesin West functioned as Wright’s winter retreat and desert studio from 1937 until his death.
