Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) has hired Al Mitchell to join its Building Technology group.

Mitchell brings experience in building science, enclosure performance, mechanical systems, durability, and sustainable design. His work includes investigations and analysis of building performance over time.

He joins SGH from Phius, where he reviewed energy models and project documentation for passive building projects. He also helped develop passive building performance standards.

Mitchell’s background combines design, research, and computational analysis. He has worked on energy modeling for new and existing buildings. He has also developed automated calculation processes and sustainable design workflows.

Mitchell serves as an adjunct faculty member at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He teaches “Net Zero Energy Building Design.”

“Al’s background in passive design building strategies, energy modeling, and research-based building performance enhances our team capabilities,” said Peter Babaian, managing principal of SGH’s Chicago office. “His expertise will help us expand the ways we support clients pursuing more efficient, resilient, and high-performing buildings.”

SGH said Mitchell’s addition supports its broader building science practice. Clients increasingly seek integrated guidance on enclosure performance, energy use, durability, and sustainable design.
