Construction is underway on a major airfield rehabilitation project at Mansfield Municipal Airport in Massachusetts. Gale Associates Inc. is providing engineering design and construction administration services through its Airport Engineering & Planning Group.

Work began July 13, 2026. The airport will remain closed to fixed-wing aircraft for about three months while crews complete the upgrades. Boston MedFlight will continue operating throughout construction, ensuring emergency medical transport services remain available across southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The project includes the reconstruction of Runway 14-32, Taxiway A, and the connecting stub taxiways. Crews will also upgrade edge lighting on Taxiways B, C, and D to comply with current Federal Aviation Administration standards.

Additional work includes drainage improvements, new airfield electrical infrastructure, guidance signs, runway and taxiway lighting, navigational aids, a new electrical vault, pavement markings, and site restoration. The project marks the first reconstruction of the airport’s primary runway since 1993.

Located about two miles southeast of downtown Mansfield, the airport serves the region’s general aviation community. The facility supports a flight school, aircraft maintenance operations, hangars, airport management, and Boston MedFlight.

“This project represents an important investment in the long-term safety, reliability, and operational efficiency of Mansfield Municipal Airport,” said Matthew Caron, Gale’s director of aviation.

Gale Associates is completing the work under its on-call engineering services agreement with the Town of Mansfield. Funding comes from the Federal Aviation Administration, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division, and the Town of Mansfield.
