Construction of a state-of-the-art biotechnology laboratory and office building in Gloucester was completed last month. The 1719 m2 (18,500 sf) facility is located in a designated port area in the city’s historic waterfront and will be dedicated to marine research.
The HouseZero lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) was completed earlier this month in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Snøhetta and Skanska Teknikk retrofitted the headquarters of the Harvard Center for Green Buildings and Cities (CGBC), in a pre-1940s building into a living laboratory and an energy-positive prototype for ultra-efficiency.
When Danvers High School in Massachusetts embarked on a $70.9-million renovation and expansion project, staying within the budget and on schedule were at the top of its priority list. The first floor of the three-story academic building was clad with insulated precast concrete panels to provide a new ‘skin’ for the structure. Expanding the precast to the upper two stories was too expensive, so the architects looked to metal paneling to provide the look and feel they desired.
A project developed through a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) class has come up with an energy efficient design for a large wood building. For this structure, called “the Longhouse,” massive timbers made of conventional lumber would be laminated together like a kind of supersized plywood.
