A team led by engineering firm ESTEYCO has won the international competition to redevelop Madrid-Chamartín Clara Campoamor Station. Architecture firms UNS and b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos partnered with ESTEYCO on the winning proposal, “Open Ecosystem.”

Adif AV organized the competition. A 16-member jury unanimously selected the proposal, awarding the highest possible score.

The jury evaluated each submission on rail operations, commercial functionality, construction feasibility, accessibility, urban integration, sustainability, and inclusivity. The winning design will transform Madrid-Chamartín Station into a transportation hub and public destination.

The proposal preserves the station’s historic vaulted roofs, a defining architectural feature. It also adds stepped terraces and urban balconies to strengthen connections between the station and surrounding neighborhoods. The design extends nearby parks into the station complex, creating a more open and pedestrian-friendly environment.

The redevelopment includes commercial space, public plazas, and mixed-use development alongside new high-rise buildings. The station will also function as an integrated mobility hub with improved access to rail, metro, taxis, bicycles, scooters, and pedestrian routes.

The project emphasizes long-term sustainability. Plans include adaptable infrastructure, universal accessibility, digital technology, and pedestrian-focused design. The improvements are expected to double the station’s capacity, increase operational efficiency, and improve passenger flow.

“Our main focus was to retain and improve the existing station complex while creating a highly sustainable, future-ready urban hub,” said UNS founder Ben van Berkel. “The new station area will improve this part of the city by attracting new activity and creating a higher quality of urban life.”
