As part of UC Riverside’s expansion, UC Riverside Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Facility (UTLF) seeks to create more flexible learning spaces for students.

McCarthy Building Companies (McCarthy), a general contracting firm, collaborated with the Riverside, Calif., university to construct a 9,290-m² (100,000-sf) interdisciplinary building that includes various spaces, from a glass dance studio to science laboratories.

The ground-up four-story structure is being constructed from lighter concrete, reducing its carbon footprint. It will also be the first structure seen on campus without a back door, so it can be experienced from all four sides.

The project, which takes inspiration from the history of indigenous textile artists and the UC Riverside Tartan, highlights the university’s commitment to inclusivity and resilience. Construction started in October 2024 and is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
