Historical document collection available

Additional historical documents have been added to American Institute of Steel Construction’s (AISC’s) online collection. Dating back to 1885, the newly added collections are of shape producer catalogs, which are the basis for much of the information found in AISC Design Guide 15, Rehabilitation and Retrofit Guide. Information includes data for discontinued wrought iron and steel shapes, a review of ASTM material standards since 1990, and information on enhancing structural systems. The historical ePubs collections available to AISC members and are part of the organization’s preservation of unique industry documents. For more information, visit www.aisc.org/epubs.

Online calculator updated

National Roofing Contractors Association’s (NRCA’s) EnergyWise Roof Calculator Online now includes 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and International Green Construction Code (IgCC) information. The updated online tool also now includes the new minimum long-term thermal resistance (LTTR) values for polyisocyanurate insulation. The calculator allows users to enter specific roof assembly information including area, climate region, heating appliance type, roof openings, and materials. Then, a report is generated including the estimated heating and cooling costs and minimum thermal requirements. The tool can be accessed at energywise.nrca.net.

NIBS ebook released

The national standard for building information modelling (BIM) has been released on ebook by National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) buildingSMART alliance. The National BIM Standard–United States (NBIMS-US) Version 2 (V2) is the first consensus-based standard governing BIM in the United States. Originally released as an online standard, the mobile version will allow users to access the document anywhere. Links to reference supporting material are included throughout, and the standard covers the full lifecycle of the building and is arranged into reference standards, information exchange standards, and best practice guidelines. Visit www.nationalbimstandard.org for more information.

Piping insulation fact sheet published

A six-page brochure, “Insulation Facts #85,” has been published by North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA) to detail insulation requirements for plastic piping. Currently, such materials are needed for service hot-water and HVAC piping, but the specific requirements are not separated for plastic and metallic piping products. The new fact sheet discusses heat loss and thermal conductivity compared between plastic and metal piping systems. International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) minimum insulation thickness requirements for commercial HVAC installations and domestic hot water and HVAC piping are also explored.

Wood use options publications released

The American Wood Council (AWC) has released a new publication describing permitted wood use in buildings as per the 2009 International Building Code (IBC). The document, Code Conforming Wood Design (CCWD), aims to assist engineers, architects, and building officials understand wood’s various uses in different applications. Documents within the resource are divided into eight separate International Code Council (ICC) groups including assembly, business, and educational buildings. The publication is not to be considered a replacement for IBC, but a companion providing information regarding building code compliant allowances for wood. A free download is available at www.awc.org.
