Built in 1931, the nearly 50-year-old conference center building was in need of some upgrades—including the restrooms. MAD Architects complete their first project in the U.S.

MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, has completed ‘Gardenhouse’ in California’s Beverly Hills, the firm’s first project in the United States. Gardenhouse is a mixed-use scheme consisting of 18 residential units above a ground floor dedicated to commercial use. Evoking the lush landscape of Beverly Hills, the scheme becomes a ‘hillside village’ with residential units ‘growing’ from the building’s living wall.

Page & Turnbull reimagines historic Calif. hotel as cultural hub

Global architecture and preservation firm Page & Turnbull has completed its reimagining of Hotel Tioga, a landmark structure in Merced, California, now converted to market-rate lifestyle housing. The adaptive reuse of the 1928 transitional Renaissance-style structure opened recently as The Tioga, an apartment building with retail space on ground level, a fitness center, and room for a future brew pub and café.
